That the risk of serious engine damage caused by low engine oil levels must be high is confirmed in a recent survey conducted on behalf of Chevron Products Company , the lubricant division of Chevron Corporation, for its Texaco Havoline brand, carried out earlier this year by CCB FastMAP.
Take first the risk. Let us say you travel frequently in your car, perhaps only for short local journeys with an occasional longer journey, and you keep an eye on your dashboard instruments. When the fuel guage is down you refuel ,but not to the full capacity of the tank so as not to carry more weight than necessary in order to maximise your mpg. The oil indicator looks good ,but as it is not indicating a warning of a low oil level, you do not check it out.No need to spend on oil yet, then? Oh dear! You may be risking serious damage to your car’s engine and a four figure repair bill.
According to the survey, only 34% of motorists in the UK regularly check their engine oil level, and of those,83% found that their vehicles had insufficient oil. Brian Hayes marketing manager for Chevron Products Company says,”Money is clearly being spent up and down the country on repairs and additional running costs which could have been avoided if owners better understood the significance of regularly topping-up their engine with the correct oil.”Hayes continues,”It [oil] plays a crucial role in the performance of modern vehicle ,the quantity of oil affects the oil’s ability to properly lubricate, cool, and clean the engine, while the performance specification of the oil can effect wear, service intervals, vehicle emissions,Diesel Particulate Filters, fuel economy and even vehicle warranty”.
So there you have it. You shouldn’t wait for your oil warning light to go on. You should regularly check your oil level is correct. Good idea also,at the same time, to check windscreen fluid, lights and tyres. The oil warning light indicates insufficient oil which may result in expensive damage to your car’s engine.
